Reversed Grip Rear Thrust

There are times when faced with multiple assailants that a strike to the rear is desired
without turning around. Several such techniques exist in Jo combat (Ushiro Tsuki,
Menuchi Ushiro Tsuki, Hasso Gaeshi Ushiro Tsuki, etc.). Strikes to the rear using
the sword usually involve pivoting or turning to the rear and using a normal forward
strike. The Reversed Grip Rear Thrust is an alternative to these.
Normally, a basic grip is used to hold the sword with the left hand on the bottom,
right hand on top next to the tsuba. The reverse grip is obtained in the following
manner. Starting in a ready stance using the basic sword grip. In this position,
the right hand is under the sword, palm up. Holding the sword in the left hand, let go
with the right and turn it over (palm down on top). This position of the right hand
is similar to that used in drawning the sword, except that the blade is now exposed
and facing forward. Letting go of the left hand, turn the sword so that it points behind
you, against your left side. Grip the pommel of the sword again with your left.
This is the reverse grip.
From this position, thrust strongly to the rear using a back-sliding motion if needed.
This technique allows a thrust to the rear without turning which might otherwise
result in a break in concentration.
