Essays on Weapons

The following essays cover a variety of topics related to the study of Japanese Weapons such as the Katana, Jo, and Naginata. They contain reflections on how the study of weapons relates to the study of Aikido and document, to some degree, my progress understanding them.

Besides being a student of Aikido-related weaponry, I have also been called upon to teach these arts to students at Northeast Aikikai. I should state for the record that these observations and comments are purely my own. I do not hold any rank in these weapon arts and do not claim to be any kind of an expert in them. Rather, I view teaching these arts as a way of sharing what little I know.

Most of the statements made here were written nearly ten years ago. Some are a bit dated, but still contain interesting ideas. I may choose to re-write or update them to reflect my current views on weapon technique. The essays are presented chronologically as written, so the latest ones are at the bottom.
